History of Gilwell Park

Find out what Gilwell Park was like over 600 years ago, see the original map of the site from the 1400's and read the title deeds for the estate from 1752.

Gilwell has a long and rich history which we can date back to 1407. You can read about some of that history here on the website.

Read about the early days and see the photographs taken on the day the Rover Scouts moved into Gilwell over 90 years ago and see the White House decked out with flags at the opening of Gilwell Park on 26th July 1919.

The origins of the Wood Badge and the Gilwell Scarf and Woggle make interesting reading and you can download more information about these items and why Wood Badge holders wear them. You can also find out who has held the title of Camp Chief of Gilwell Park.

The interactive timeline shows some of the major events that have happened at Gilwell Park since 1919 including some fantastic old and new photographs.

To read even more about Gilwell's history Peter Rogers has written a book which is where most of the historical information on this website comes from and you can buy that book from the Information Centre at Gilwell Park.
